How Atomium works

WHAT IS FRICTION AND HOW IT OCCURS?

Friction is an abrasive process occurring between two surfaces sliding against each other. On the outside both surfaces might appear solid, however on the micro level every surface looks like mountains and valleys . When surfaces slide against each other, their peaks collide. During collision enormous pressure demolishes the peaks and tore new cavities in the surface. At the point of collision temperature immensely increases and can reach up to thousand degrees Celsius. Debris created by collision further impede motion of parts. If a lubricant is used to facilitate movement of both parts, debris floats in the lubricant. For example, in vehicle engines, equivalent of a 10 pence coin is taken out of the engine with each oil change.

The wear of parts increases gradually, diminishing their effectiveness and eventually leading to breakdown of one of the parts. The parts change their shape, creating gaps and causing loss of compression. Unstable movement of parts leads to loss of power and increased negative side effects, such as higher fuel consumption, vibrations, noise level etc. Oil seeping into fuel combustion chambers through the wider gaps burns, which results in thick smoke from exhaust.

WHAT ATOMIUM CHANGES?

Due to high temperature and pressure inside engine cylinder, Atomium‘s mineral nano-particles continuously create new layer, an extremely strong bound between lose metal debris and iron atoms of engine surface. Resulting compounded surface is actually stronger than original metal parts, because of unique properties of the layer.
